Deep Listening
Recently in class at York Tech, we began our ethics. One of the first lessons is holding space for a partner. This practice teaches us to listen with our whole being, not just physically hearing with our ears. In the quiet corners of our existence, often we mistake listening for hearing . We wait for our turn to speak, filtering the words of others through the busy architecture of our minds. But true connection, the kind that shifts the frequency of a room, demands something far more ancient and profound. It requires a shedding of the ego-self to inhabit the space between two hearts.
By observing nature we uncover a powerful truth: Communication is not merely an exchange of information; it is a ceremony of presence.
To listen deeply is to listen with the purpose of helping the other person empty their heart is a gift. It is a radical act of love. When we listen with no agenda, no desire to correct, advise, or defend we create a container of safety.
This is where we have the opportunity to take pause. When we suspend our internal monologue, we stop listening with our ears and start hearing with our whole being. This is a practice of total immersion: engaging your body to ground the energy, opening your heart to hold the space, and quieting the mind to receive the unspoken. When we communicate so much is left unsaid but still needs to be heard.
When we hold this space, we provide the greatest gift one human can give another: the experience of truly being heard. To be heard is to have one's internal reality witnessed without judgment or distortion. It is a restorative act that validates the speaker’s existence, helping them feel anchored and seen. When someone feels safely heard, their nervous system down-regulates, their defenses fall away, and a true bridge of understanding is built.
I often look to our animal allies for lessons on authenticity, and horses are my greatest teacher of heart-centered communication. The medicine they carry is magic if we can pause and see it.
Horses live in a state of constant, fluid awareness. They do not possess the human capacity for deception or the ego-driven need to justify their position. When we observe the herd we see the art of honest, non-verbal presence.
THE LESSONS:
Energy is the First Language: A horse senses the congruence between your heart and your words. They horse will respond to your vibration, your truth, sometimes it is a truth you consciously know, sometimes it is a truth you bury deep inside. They hear it, they respond to it without judgement or expectation.
The Herd Mind: Like the herd, when we communicate, we are part of a larger, interconnected web. Horse medicine teaches us that our nervous systems are always in conversation. By regulating our own heart rate and grounding our energy, we invite the other person to settle into a space of safety, just as a calm lead mare guides the herd.
How can we turn these ancient lessons into our modern reality?
Pause : Before responding, take a conscious breath. Honor the space between you by not rushing to fill it with noise. Listen for the truth vibrating beneath the surface.
The Mirror of Compassion: Listen for the intention beneath the words. When you listen with your whole being, you perceive the fear or the need that is truly being expressed. By meeting that need with presence, you ensure the other person feels fully heard.
Speaking from the Center: Speak from your core. Remove the "clutter" of ego-driven needs. Like a horse, whose movements are efficient and honest, keep your communication clear, intentional, and anchored in love.
When we commit to this path, we stop viewing communication as a battlefield and start viewing it as a sacred dance. We realize that love is within and all around us, hidden in the silence between our words, waiting for us to stop talking long enough to feel its pulse.
Clear, heartfelt communication is the most potent medicine we have. It heals the speaker, restores the listener, and weaves a stronger, more resilient fabric between us all.
Next time you find yourself in conversation, invite the sacred in. Listen and hear with a tender heart, and allow your presence to be a gentle bridge toward deeper understanding.
In so much love xo,
Aho and amen,
Kim
A Prayer of Attunement
To god, great spirit , the presence that dwells deep in our hearts and being, grant me the stillness to move beyond the chatter of my own mind so that I hear the language of the sacred echoing through the world around me.
In grandfather Fire, help me hear the crackle of transformation. The voice that burns away the old, purifies the intention, and reminds me that warmth and light are the true heart of courage.
In grandmother Water, help me hear the song of fluidity. The voice that carries our memories and speaks of surrender, of following the path of least resistance, and of the deep, strong but gentle rhythmic pulse of life that cleanses and restores.
In grandfather Wind, help me hear the whisper of movement. The voice that carries change, clears the stagnant air, and reminds me that I am breath, I am spirit, I am my ancestors, and I am ever-shifting.
In mother Earth, help me hear the drumbeat of her heart help me feel her stability. The voice that speaks of ancient roots, grounded patience, and the steady, quiet endurance that supports every step I take.
In the Animals, help me hear the wisdom of instinct. Their voice teaches honesty, loyalty, and the beauty of being fully present, reminding me that every living creature is a sacred teacher in disguise.
In the Stars, the Moon, and the Sun, help me hear the song of the cosmos. The voice of the vast, eternal pattern, the light that guides my darkness, and the rhythmic cycle that hums in harmony with my own soul.
May I listen with my whole being, not just with my ears, but with my heart and my spirit. May I walk through this world in constant conversation with the Divine, finding truth in every element and grace in every breath.
Aho and Amen.
